Micaela, you’ve mentioned that your personal health struggles led you to functional medicine. Could you share more about that journey and how it influenced your career path?
I struggled with my health for years and was written off time and time again by western medicine providers that everything in my labs were “normal” and all my symptoms were just “in my head”. I knew what I was feeling was not right (chronic bloating, fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, and much more). I finally discovered functional health coaching and did comprehensive lab testing to ultimately find out I had chronically high cortisol levels, Hashimoto's, hypothyroidism, PCOS, insulin resistance, SIBO, parasites, and leaky gut all leading to all the symptoms I was experiencing. I became so fascinated that all the answers were within me the whole time. It really just took a more in-depth approach, so I shifted my career path from marketing to Functional Health Coaching and started sharing my story via social media and Be Balanced was born.

Your expertise includes gut health, hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, PCOS, and autoimmunity. What common challenges do clients face in these areas, and how do you address them?
My clients commonly struggle with fatigue, weight gain, bloating, and irregular cycles (PCOS, perimenopause and menopause). We address these imbalances through our 4 step process (addressing the gut, hormones, metabolic function, and then finally focusing on body composition at the end).
The lab testing we do is essential for knowing how to exactly create this process seamlessly for our clients.

What is your favorite wellness tip for maintaining a non-toxic lifestyle?
Don’t stress about the little things. For years I was very extreme trying to avoid every single toxin in my environment and it drove me crazy to be honest. So I really took a step back and just controlled what I could control and now I feel like I can live life stress free and as low tox as possible.

Functional nutrition often addresses healing from the inside out. How do you see external factors like water quality influencing internal health, and how can a product like the Weddell Duo fit into a comprehensive wellness strategy?
Adding something like the Weddell Duo can be incredibly pivotal for making changes within your health. Tap water these days is filled with harmful contaminates that can mimic estrogen inside the body and disrupt your immune system and gut microbiome. This is a must for me in my wellness routine because it's a quick and sustainable way to support your body from the inside out.
What guidance would you offer to individuals aspiring to pursue a career in functional nutrition?
Be yourself. I think so many people try to be exactly like someone else when everyone has their own unique stories and ideas and leaning into that will draw in the audience you want to attract—don't fall into copying others’ work when you have all the ideas and creativity you need inside you!

What are your future aspirations for Be Balanced and your role in the wellness community?
I hope Be Balanced is a top name in the functional health coaching circle and I really hope to scale to be able to allow more people to experience the same benefits I did many years ago when I was struggling to find answers and support.

We often hear that some of the best ideas come to us in the shower. Have you had any interesting shower thoughts lately, especially related to your work or wellness?
Funny story: my entire wellness community idea started in the shower! I am a big visual person and constantly have visions of myself and my business in the shower. I guess you’ll have to see what happens next with Be Balanced…
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Micaela Riley for her valuable contribution to this post and for sharing her expertise on achieving wellness and balance.
