Real Examples: What Water Reports Reveal in Different U.S. Cities

Every city's water is different because of its source water, treatment process, infrastructure, and geology. While all public water systems must meet federal regulations, residents often experience different cosmetic issues depending on where they live.

New York City

New York City is known for having some of the softest municipal water in the country because it's supplied primarily by protected upstate reservoirs in the Catskill and Delaware watersheds.


While residents generally don't deal with significant hard water issues, the city's water is still disinfected with chlorine, which some people may notice in the smell or taste.


In older apartment buildings, the condition of internal plumbing can have a greater impact on tap water than the city's treatment process itself.

Philadelphia

San Francisco

San Francisco receives most of its drinking water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in the Sierra Nevada, giving the city relatively soft water compared to many other parts of California. Portland

Can two neighborhoods in the same city have different water quality?

Yes. After water is treated to meet federal and state drinking water standards, it travels through miles of underground distribution pipes before reaching neighborhoods.


Along the way, several factors can affect the water's quality, including:

  • Construction or maintenance on local water lines.
